First you will need to enable the FTP Service on the NAS control panel. Then you will need to add an account and give it a username. Next select the newly added user and click Modify. Give the username a password, make sure it is enabled, and give it the correct Access Rights that you wish to assign. On the "Share List" to the right are the folders you have on the NAS that you can share over the FTP protocol. The "Account Share" on the left are the folders that you wish to let this user have access to when they login using FTP. Select the folder on the left and click add to put it in the account share list. Repeat this untill all the folders that you wish this user to have access to is on this list. Click the Modify button to save your work and move on to setting up the NAS with a Static IP address.

You must setup your NAS with a Static IP address. To do this login to the NAS and navagate to the IP configuration page. You will need an IP address on your network that is not being used. Type in the subnet mask (if you need to find your subnet mask go to Start-Run and type cmd, at the DOS prompt type ipconfig/all and read the subnet mask line). The Gateway and Primary DNS will be the IP address of your router (you can leave the Secondary DNS blank). Click apply and you will be ready to move on to the next step.

To FTP into your Simple NAS from outside of your network, you must know the external IP address of your network. You must also have a router that has a Virtual Server (or Port Forwarding) setting to route the FTP port to the IP address and port 21 of the Simple NAS.

Go to www.portforward.com and select your router on the list below. At the top of the page it will say "If you do not see the program you are forwarding ports for, be sure to visit our default guide for this router". Proceed to the default guide and setup your router to forward the ports to your NAS and use the Static IP that we just gave the NAS. Once you follow all the instuctions you should be ready to connect via FTP to the NAS anywhere you want. The external IP address of the network will be the IP address that you will use to connect to the drive. So if your external IP address is 64.28.33.145 you would type in your browser ftp://64.28.33.145:21, the :21 is the port that is used by the FTP protocol. Type in the user name and password that you setup on the NAS. If you wish you can also use a FTP client to connect to the NAS. FTP clients have more of a drag and drop style of browsing, connecting through an internet browser will work if you don't wish to download a seprate client.
