  • Why will Windows 2000 or XP detect my drive but not assign it a drive letter?
  • Windows 2000 and XP will not assign a drive letter to non-formatted hard drives. You must format the hard drive first in order for Windows to assign it a drive letter. For more information, please see the Knowledge Base section.
  • Why can I access the data off my drive in Windows 2000/XP, but Windows 98/ME tells me the drive is not formatted?
  • The drive was most likely formatted using an NTFS partition under Windows 2000 or XP. Windows 98/ME uses the FAT32 file system and does not recognize NFTS partitions. However, Windows 2000/XP will work fine with the older FAT32 file system as well.
  • Does my Warp Drive 3.5 need the power adapter?
  • The power adapter is only required when you want to power the hard drive on in the unit or when your current USB bus is passive (non-powered). We recommend having the AC Adapter plugged in if you are also using the built in USB Hub.
  • Are there any capacity limitations for the drive I use?
  • No. The only limitations on what you use depends on the file system you use to format the drive itself. The external case has no limitations itself.
  • Why does Windows ask to install the device driver again?
  • Windows treats each USB 2.0 port as a separate device. If you moved your adapter to a different port, it will install the driver for that port.
  • I am worried about the drive overheating. What should I do?
  • The Warp Drive's aluminum casing was designed for heat dissipation. Thus, the aluminum casing is the heat sink, which means it will get warm or hot. Please refer to article T4274-1430 for more information.
  • What should the jumper settings be for the hard drive I install?
  • The jumper settings differ from drive to drive. Usually, the drive works best if it is in the "Cable Select" mode. However, this is not true for all drives. Please try the setting that works best for your drive, or refer to your drive's documentation.
  • Will the Warp Drive 3.5" automatically power down the hard drive?
  • The Warp Drive 3.5" does not currently support the hard disk idle feature. It is recommended to switch the hard drive off when it is not in use.
  • Does the Warp Drive 3.5" come with DOS drivers?
  • No. The Warp Drive only ships with support for Windows 98SE, Millennium, 2000, XP, and Mac OS X. Please refer Knowledge Base Article T4303-1300 for more information.

  • Check your light status first. You should have a steady red light when the unit is powered on. It will blink when the hard drive is being accessed.
  • Check the Windows Device Manager for errors. Look in the Windows Device Manager for any errors that pertain to the USB device drivers. Your USB ports may not be working properly. A quick way to check is to plug a different USB device into the port and see if it works.
  • Make sure the hard drive is formatted. Windows will not assign a drive letter to unformatted hard drives. Please follow the steps in the Knowledge Base article T4096-1545 or the below tutorial on how to format the hard drive under Windows.
  • Make sure the drive is being powered on. Make sure the power adapter is properly plugged in to the Warp Drive. The use of the hard drive requires the use of the power supply, otherwise the card reader will be the only thing that works.
